Why Rainwater Harvesting?
Rainwater Harvesting and recycling has been embraced on mainland Europe for many years. Climate change and changes in rainfall patterns are now becoming very apparent in the UK. Recently the lack of water (notably in the South and East of England) has raised interest in Rainwater Harvesting as an Environmentally Sustainable Technology.
Rainwater Harvesting Systems are available for a range of uses:–
- Domestic and Social Housing
- Supermarkets and Shops
- Hospitals, Nursing Homes and Hotels
- Factories, Offices and Warehouses
Using collected rainwater that would otherwise be a demand for mains water reduces water bills and is kind to the environment. An additional benefit is that these systems divert some of the UK’s annual rainfall away from the sewerage system, thus helping to reduce the flooding risks which have featured so largely in the news.
With Rainwater Harvesting reducing the demand for mains water it will enable water companies to consider reducing the amount of water they extract from our rivers and aquifers… (Current extraction rates have a serious effect on the local ecological system).
Rainwater Harvesting can also be beneficial as part of a wider sustainable urban drainage system incorporating attenuation and infiltration systems.
