How does Rainwater Harvesting work?

Rainwater is collected from the roof via guttering and down-spouts. It gravity-feeds through underground drainage pipe and is then passed through a filter before entering the tank.
Filters can be remote from the rainwater storage tank or can be fitted inside the turret of the tank. The filter removes any leaves or larger particles from the rainwater before it is delivered into the tank. This improves the quality of the water being stored in the tank.
The rainwater enters the tank through a calmed inlet device which prevents any sediment which may build up over long periods from being disturbed and discolouring the main body of rainwater.
A submersible pump is installed inside the tank… when the pump or controller senses a drop in pressure due to someone turning on a tap or flushing a toilet it starts to pump water. This water is then automatically delivered by the RWH unit to the point of use.
Main use for non potable water is:-
- Toilet Flushing
- Washing Machines
- Stand-pipe or garden irrigation systems
- Jet washing and car cleaning
Neptune Aqua RWH systems efficiently manage and ensure a continued supply of harvested rainwater, supplementing this with mains water during dry spells where required.
Sensors constantly monitor water levels within the tank… If water levels are low (perhaps during periods of low rainfall, drought or heavy use) sensors signal the controller to operate a solenoid valve allowing mains water to top the tank up. The controller sends just enough mains water into the tank to allow the system to operate, and then signals the solenoid valve to close.
Storage tanks are usually installed underground (e.g. under a drive or garden), although ground level and wall-mounted tanks are available for some applications.
Storage tanks come in many different shapes, sizes and materials:-
- HDPE – High Density Polyethylene
- GRP – Glass reinforced plastic
- Steel – welded or sectional bolt together
- Box crate and liner
- Concrete fabricated sections
Neptune Aqua is one of the few companies that Designs and Manufactures its own controllers and tanks in the UK. This gives us the ability to develop bespoke systems very quickly for any size of project. If you have a special project of any size and cannot find a system to meet your technical demands, let us design and build one for you!
Good luck with your project!
